Level 1 IT Course
The purpose of the qualification is to give users a basic practical understanding of IT and skills in the efficient use of Microsoft Office Software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
Anyone that wants to learn how to use digital technology tools efficiently to support their work, whether it is at school, at home or at work. This qualification will provide a basis for any other higher level qualification in the digital technology domain and is especially designed to underpin transition to higher level digital technology based qualifications at level 3 both in the user and practitioner sectors.
What will I learn?
You will complete 5 modules of learning:
Cyber Security – This unit is about identifying security concerns and taking appropriate security precautions to protect IT systems and data.
Word Processing – The candidate will enter, edit and combine text and other information accurately within word processing documents. Structure information within word processing documents. Use work processing software tools to format and present documents.
Excel Spreadsheets – Use a spreadsheet to enter, edit and organise numerical and other data. Use appropriate formulas and tools to summarise and display spreadsheet information. Select and use appropriate tools and techniques to present spreadsheet information effectively.
PowerPoint Presentations – Input and combine text and other information with presentation slides. Use presentation software tools to structure, edit and format slides. Prepare slides for presentation to meet needs.
Outlook – Use e-mail software tools and techniques to compose and send messages. Manage incoming email effectively.
How will I complete this course?
You will complete 5 days study for 7 hours per day. Your normal hours of study in a classroom would be 9am – 4pm however, in the current Covid Lockdown we realise that there needs to be flexibility around hours of study and have therefore tried to ensure this programme is as flexible as possible in terms of studying times. Each day will start with a live lesson from 10am – 11am where you will be introduced to the module of learning for that day with demonstrations of tasks you will be required to complete.
A learning portal is also provided where you will watch a series of videos prior to completing a quiz (practice exam) and then progressing to take the end of day exam. All exams are multiple choice, and you are able to resit them a second time if required.
In addition, there will be a series of daily tasks set where you will be required to use your new skills to produce documents such as budget spreadsheets, formal letters and an interview presentation.
What pre-requisites exist?
You must have used a computer before to send basic emails, type in information and be able to connect to the internet. You must have access to an internet enabled desktop PC, laptop or tablet with keyboard for the duration of the training. To qualify for the course funding you must be able to evidence earning of less than £18,136 per annum or be claiming a benefit due to unemployment. You must have basic English and Maths abilities to type a formal letter or competition adding sums using a calculator.
You must have also been living in the UK for a minimum of three years, be able to show photo ID (passport, driving licence or residence card) and hold a national insurance number or have evidence of having applied.
What will I gain at the end of the course?
Upon successful completion you will gain a national qualification certificate entitled Level 1 Certificate IT User.
What can I do next?
We hope this qualification will help you to secure new employment or progress to a level 2 IT qualification which would be the equivalent of a GCSE programme. Alternatively, you may wish to combine this qualification with the completion of Functional Skills in English and Maths so you have a very good basis to move into careers such as Administration or another office based role.
